Understanding Growth Phases:

Understanding the growth phases of a broiler chicken is essential for timing transitions in nutrition and environment. The life cycle is typically divided into three distinct periods—Brooding, Growing, and Finishing—each requiring a specific balance of protein and energy to support the bird’s rapid physiological development.

The Brooding Phase (Days 0–14) is the most critical window, as chicks are unable to regulate their own body temperature and rely entirely on external heat sources. During this time, the focus is on “starting” the bird with high-protein crumbles (22–24% protein) to stimulate organ and skeletal growth. By the Growing Phase (Days 15–28), the bird’s appetite increases significantly, and the diet transitions to a “Grower” pellet that balances protein with higher energy levels to build muscle mass rapidly.

In the final Finishing Phase (Day 29–Harvest), the objective shifts toward maximizing carcass weight and breast meat yield. The feed is adjusted to be high in energy (calories) but lower in protein (around 18%) to allow for efficient fat deposition and final weight gain. Monitoring the Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) throughout these phases ensures that the birds are hitting their genetic potential; in 2026, a well-managed flock should reach a market weight of 2.0–2.5 kg by day 42 with minimal feed wastage.
