Red Spot Disease—clinically known as Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS)—is a severe, systemic bacterial infection that poses a major threat to catfish aquaculture. It is driven primarily by bacteria of the genus Aeromonas (such as Aeromonas hydrophila), which are ubiquitous in aquatic environments.

1. Primary Causes and Environmental Triggers

While Aeromonas bacteria naturally inhabit water bodies, clinical outbreaks of Red Spot Disease are almost always catalyzed by environmental stressors that compromise the catfish’s immune system:

  • Compromised Water Quality: High concentrations of ammonia and nitrite paired with critically low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels.
  • High Organic Loads: Heavy accumulations of unconsumed feed and fecal waste create a nutrient-dense breeding ground for bacterial proliferation.
  • Overcrowding: High stocking densities accelerate waste accumulation, deplete oxygen rapidly, and increase physical contact between fish.
  • Physical Trauma and Handling: Abrasions from sorting, handling, netting, or transport provide direct entry points for the bacteria.

2. Clinical Symptoms

Recognizing the physical and behavioral markers of Red Spot Disease early is essential for mitigating catastrophic losses across a production stock:

  • Behavioral Indicators: Fish display lethargy, loss of appetite (going off-feed), sluggish movement near pond edges, and swimming close to the water surface.
  • External Pathology (The “Red Spot” Manifestation): Characterized by distinct hemorrhagic red spots, open skin ulcers, deep necrotic muscle sores, frayed or ragged fins, and exophthalmia (“pop-eye”).
  • Internal Findings (Necropsy): Post-mortem examinations commonly reveal fluid-filled, swollen abdomens (ascites), enlarged kidneys and spleen, pale or mottled livers, and bloody intestines.
